Meng Qing Yuan Pics

Here are some pics taken in Meng Qing Yuan, Airport Town and Harbour port...

Most works are focus on the bank of the streams ... The plants are planted initially horizontally, then let the roots grow deep into the soil so that the plants can trap the impurities in the water , thus "clean-up" the water to some extent . Algaes are also put into the bank at first, then let them grow naturally, which will eat up P and N in the water.

In The ProCess Of Learning

Yo yo .. a little updates for last week...

On friday , i ponned school to go on a company excursion to see what my new company - Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences (SAES) have done on the ecoloical engineering aspect.

Went to school earli in the mrng and set off with a batch of 18 students to the first destination - MENG QING YUAN at CAO BAO road. The "tour guide" is my current supervisor : Prof Lee Xiao Ping. He is also the Vice-director of the company. First impression of Meng Qing Yuan was that it was a tourist ground but i was very wrong.

The garden was actually a neighbourhood park where old people , kids come to take walks and relax. The whole pond was built in a such way that water from the Su Zhou river was partially "clean-up" through the water system before being return back to the river. Was amazed to actually see the whole set-up and understand the mechanisms involved from the prof. This garden was actually done up using Prof Lee's concepts.

The next destination was to go visit some streams at the airport town. The sides of these streams were planted with "bamboo" type plants to intercept small particles and also to beautify the environment.

We had lunch at this seafood restaurant near a harbour. Had a fulfilling lunch .

The last destination , we were brought to see a live example of wetlands. Overall , had an idea of what ecological engr is about . Actually , before i entered NTU, had wanted to take this field but NTU did not have the course. Sad =( haiz....

Then on sunday , went to this Brazil Steak House at Jing An Si road to have brazilian bbq lunch buffet . It's like 55 rmb/pax. This luxurious lunch was to "celebrate" Qiaoli's birthday in advance. Well juz an excuse for us to have good meals =P Went with Peter , Alvin , Yuan Shan , Whye heng and 1601 family (except Meixian cos she was sick) . Well ... the restaurant provides beef with different cooking tastes. Besides, also had pork , lamb meats , sausages , fries , salads , cakes , desserts , pastas etc. Had a super heavy lunch .

As for Monday and Todae, i attended a seminar held by my company on soil contamination and remediation . Heard several presentations by different speakers from diff countries and fields. ONe of the guest speaker is from UK university , Prof David Lerner. He gave pretty interesting presentations on land contamination& risk assessments . Learnt pretty much knowledge on the different contamination situations in UK and China. Well.. besides, can write something in my GIP report . Hehehe ...

Nanjing Trip on 14th-15th April

Yo people..beena long time since i last blogged .. was busy the whole week since i came back from Nanjing . Anyway .. here are some places i went to ...

Earli in the mrng, took the first train n travelled to the sch campus ; gotta be ther by 7am ,on the way bought Mac Donald for breakfast. Boarded the coach bus provided by the school and set off happily.

The journey took like 4 hrs in total to reach our first destination - 中山陵 , a place where Sun Zhong Shan's tomb was built. The place was rather big , full of tour grps . It is surrounded with tall trees , stairs , ancient statues etc. Overall , a nice place to tour. Get to know more abt how mr. SUN's tomb was moved to Nanjing , and also get to see his tomb.

Then settled down in the hotel arranged by the school in a popular district named 夫子庙街, waa was so happi to see my room . The hotel lobby does not look grand or posh but once me n mel get to our room at the 2nd flr (2213) , we were surprised to see a nice, grand with ancient decor room. Took quite a few pics in the room ... haha the Tv still provide "scv" programs ..... Along this street, small stalls were set-up sellin mainly handicrafts and FOOD ! Tt's why at the dinner , i did not eat much as i kept my stomach to try out those street delicacies ! Had Smelly toufu (first time tried,not bad) , Ice Kachang , Tepan-Octupus . ATe until my stomach started to feel uneasy ... walked to mani places around the street .. explored some nice lighted streets . Bought alot of local snacks back , gng to bring back SIngapore. The next mrng , after a heavy breakfast , we set off to the final destination prior to leaving Nanjing. We were brought to 总统府 to look at the history of Nanjing , and also get to tour ard the residence place of Sun Zhong Shan when he took charge as the president of Nanjing.

The lunch was arranged at a posh hotel . Had the nicest food since i arrived in Shanghai. Think our school spent alot on this trip. At least they are not stingy lo. Haha ...

Anyway , since this week , i had been gng to a new company (stil without the pay) This company is a env. research centre . Think will get to experience more on Env. stuffs. The lunch is provided by the centre - everyday get to eat at a hotel restaurant . Sounds good rite .. the food is nice lo ... ANyway, i hope to get to learn more things in this centre , trying to compensate for the lost time .. me n mel are helping to translate some scientific journals these few days ... todae went to HUA TONG UNI to attend a prof's lecture on ecological engr. Made me feel so int in tt area.

trip to 朱家角

A sudden decision led me n roomie to set off to 朱家角 on Friday after the Han yu Quiz...

In fact, we have decided to set off on Sat after the sch but heard tt Jun qin n Alvin is gng straight after sch , so we joined in the grp. But as we have not packed yet , immed during the Han yu break , we set off straight home to pack up. Met the grp at HUANG PI NAN stat and walked to the bus stop.

This travelling grp included : Jun Qin , Alvin , MAthew , me , mel , Shuying & Huiying .

The bus - 沪朱线 , 9rmb fare fee , that we took at Yan An Xi road took us almost 2 hrs to reach our destination. We reached at ard 8pm , walked ard in search of a motel . Along the way , also took glance at some local snacks and shops...Heard from the previous batch of PPL who came here praised abt the Pig's trotter and the meat dumplings here , so i also could not take my eyes away from the array of food in stores ... when we walked to the motel.

A nice lady in a restaurant led us to this motel which the charges could be bargained. We settled for 2 rooms at the rate of 90 rmb per room. the girls one room and the guys one room . Two girls to a bed. The motel looked deserted but at least the gd thing was that the motel is situated in the old town, so we alrdy saved on the entrance fee into the town. The regulations is that after 8pm, no entrance fee is needed to enter the old town.

After putting our backpacks in the motel , we set off to take a tour ard the town. Felt that in the night where not much tourists ard , we could have a better view of the town n also can enjoyed the serenity of the night ~~~ though most attractions we could not enter and some alleys were not lit. Toook a few pics and of course ... bought some food along the way ... mainly dumplings n pig's trotter. The food we shared among ourselves ... *** enjoyed feeding each other like pigs ! lol ... went back to motel to rest and bathe.

Next mrng , woke up ard 5am , hopin to catch the sunrise . BUt disappointing enuff, when i woke up, the sun was alrdy up in the sky halfway .. sad !!! luckily Mel managed to take some pics as she woke up earlier ...

Though no sunrise to see , we walked thru the town ... as there wasn't much crowd in the mrng , we took the chance to take as mani pics as possible.

With breakfast - dumplings & Jian Bao , we encountered this boat man who psychoed us to take his boat ard the town. Since we alrdy planned this boat ride ,we went ahead with it ~ of course was after barginning . 90rmb for 7 ppl for an hr tour.

Ard 8.30am , Tourists kept coming in ... Nevertheless, we went shopping ard for local snacks and buying some souvenirs . Bought some local snacks and bought some dumplings back for hsemates to savour. The dumpling costs 2rmb each and the pig's trotter is sold by weight like 5 rmb/jin. After a hearty shopping trip , me , jun qin and mel had this craving for mrng coffee so we went to ILLY - a coffee cafe to have some nice , fragrance coffee . Slacked at the cafe for some time , had small chats, got to know abt each other.


By 12 noon , we checked out the motel and went out of the old town. As our stomaches were full of dumplings and snacks , we skipped proper meals. With a suggestion to go to OUTLETs , we set off immed. It's 30 mins ride .




Outlet is a big big plaza which branded fashions are sold at prices lower than market price , it's like a wholesale market. we spilted off to shop . After some time , as roomie n i were rather tired , we set off for home first . Took a bus and reached home safely.

ShopPIng Spree

Well .. it's a sin that i have done yesterday - Shopping , think spent almost 300rmb ba ...
Here is how it goes ....

Yesterday , me n roomie took a day off from work to go extend our visas which is expiring on 19th April. Went ard 12 plus , not much ppl ther .. though we gotta wait for like 46 queues before us , think waiting time was like 30 mins or so. The proceedings were fast , juz passed all our documents to the counter staffs and we were DONE ! ! Walked to the SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STAT , where there's a big underground shopping mall ...

Introduction abt the place :
It's packed with shops selling mainly clothes/Shoes . Have 4 divisions - A,B,C & D areas (actually all selling the same stuffs). Common stuffs like ABERCROMBIE , ADIDAS , PUMA , FAKE Branded stuffs etc. Also , most ang mohs shop here ...

Well .... after shopping ard for like 3 hrs , here are our harvests :

Mine : A pair of puma sneakers (55rmb) , a BABY MILO tee(55rmb) , a PUMA jacket (110rmb) , a ROXY GIRL jacket (75rmb) .

Roomie's : ALOT .... (like 600rmb of stuffs) ... lolx

ANyway , we shopped for things that is not common .. tt's why we paid the price higher than the other common stuffs .. somemore the quality is much better ... DUN MIND paying for the stuffs that i like .. and njoy the shopping too ...

We ended our shopping spree @ ard 6pm , then we proceeded on to People Square cos dun feel like gng home ... wanted to explore ... we wanted to go to the "culture street" along the people square area . but actually the street has become commercialised ... so nuttin much to explore too ... sad ... but we found this SHANGHAI BOOK CITY , rather big with 7 levels ,so find all sorts of books here except the collection of eng books are limited =( .... read thru some of the books ....

Went home ard 9.30pm .

Well ... Overall , had an enjoyable day ... PEACEFUL and COMFROTABLE ....
